Today we will examine the development of music in the trilogy by looking at a few of the main themes and leitmotivs. The consistency and development of Shores music across all three films are a key factor in maintaining continuity as well providing deeper meanings of not only the story as a whole, but the journey of many individual characters, due to the many leitmotifs being utilized throughout. Including the largest selection of Leitmotifs, which are a “recurrent musical fragment representing a character, place, object or idea” (Bernhardt, 1997) yet, the scores to this trilogy were truly an outstanding achievement in the film music industry. Howard Shore not only composed but orchestrated and conducted his music for the trilogy. The Lord of the Rings (LR) franchise consists of a film and two sequels: “The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001), “The Two Towers” (2002) and “The Return of the King” (2003).
